Dinky Toy cars debuted in early 1934 where they started off life as trackside accessories to compliment the O scale Hornby Railways model train sets manufactured by Meccano Ltd of Liverpool, England. There are six model cars that is issued initially and they are christened as the No. 22 series, these include the 22a Sports Car, 22b Sports Coupe, 22c Motor Truck, 22d Delivery Van, 22e Tractor, and 22f Tank.However,like many pre war die cast models, they are made from ZAMAK thus making them vulnerable to zinc pest, therefore mint condition pre war models are extremely rare. Earlier models are also issued as generic model that does not bore significant resemblance to any brands of actual cars that are manufactured at the time. In 1935, Dinky came out with the Series 30, which features vehicles that bore accurate resemblance to actual car manufactured at that time, the series include the 30a Chrysler Airflow Saloon, the 30b Rolls-Royce, the 30c Dailer, and the 30d Vauxhall. The Series 28 on the other hand features a series of delivery van with some of them decorated with the livery of well known companies, this "decorated" delivery vans are hot collectible items that fetch outstanding prices in auctions.
The factory however stop production during the Second World War. After the war, the first significant issue were the Series 40, which consist of mainly British Saloon Car, this series are made with better quality material and feature more intricacy that makes them more accurate to the actual car. The Series 40 became very popular at the time and ushered in the golden era for Dinky Toys.
